Meet Your Coaches:
Andrew M. Carter
Andrew is happy to call Virginia Beach home. He was originally born in Canada and moved with his family to the US at a young age. Andrew started competitive swimming at age 15 with the Timberlake Torpedoes. He later coached the winter swim league with Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation as well as a summer swim team. During college, he assumed a role as team representative for the summer swim team. Andrew graduated from ODU in 2008 with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and is working on his Master’s in Public Administration. This is his third year as the swim league representative for the Princess Anne Piranhas. Andrew’s advice for league participants is to “make sure you’re having fun. Your greatest opponent is yourself.”
Kira N. Lopez
Kira is a senior at Old Dominion University and plans to graduate in May 2014 with a degree in Biology. Growing up in her hometown of Virginia Beach, Kira swam for the Oceana swim team for four years and has coached there for the past three summers. This is Kira’s third year coaching the Princess Anne Piranhas and she could not be more excited. In her free time, Kira enjoys snowboarding, hiking, baking and swimming, of course! Kira wants the team to come together to have fun, work hard, and just keep swimming.
Teresa was born in Yokosuka, Japan and has lived in Virginia Beach for the longest of any location. Teresa first swam for the Oceana swim team. She graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor’s in Science with a minor in Recreation. Although this is Teresa’s first season with the Piranhas, she joins the team with lots of coaching experience. She previously coached Oceana swim team, TCAC, Sasebo summer swim team, and taught swim lessons for years. Teresa enjoys swimming, running, biking, hiking, canoeing, and whitewater rafting. She advises swimmers that “what you do in practice is what you will end up doing in a meet. Swim hard and practice well and you will do well in a meet. I hope you have fun and enjoy swimming as much as I do.”
Joe joined the staff of Princess Anne Recreation Center in September 2013 and is excited to coach the Piranhas. Joe was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Snider High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps for 14 years and recently graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science with a minor in History. Joe is an American Red Cross Instructor/Instructor Trainer in Lifeguarding, Water Safety, and CPR/AED; a YMCA Instructor in Lifeguarding and Swimming; a certified USS Swimming Coach; and a certified diver. He has been teaching aquatic activities for over 25 years. Ever since he could walk, he found himself surrounded by water and has a true love for any aquatic activities. Joe looks forward to working with staff and community members to make the Princess Anne Recreation Center the best aquatic facility.
