Lifeguard Training

Our lifeguard course teaches students lifeguarding skills to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course is 31.25 hours in length including the eligibility swim. To pass the course, you must attend all classes and pass three written tests spaced throughout the course and a final water skills test at the end of the course.
Prerequisite – must be 15 years old before the end of the class session and must pass eligibility swim. Eligibility swim consists of 300 m/y continuous swim of front crawl and breaststroke; 20 m/y 10 lb. brick retrieval and tow; and 2 minutes treading water, legs only.
Certification – American Red Cross CPR/AED and Lifeguarding/First Aid
To become a lifeguard with the City of Virginia Beach, you must be at least 16 years of age, currently certified in CPR/AED for Lifeguards and in Lifeguarding/First Aid. Search and apply for positions at the

Water Safety Instructor Training
Our water safety instructor course trains students to teach American Red Cross swimming classes. The course is 30.5 hours in length including the eligibility swim. To pass the course, you must attend all classes, pass all practice teaching assignments and score 80% or above on the final written test.
Prerequisite – must be 16 years old and must pass eligibility swim. Eligibility swim consists of 25 y front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and 15 y butterfly. Must also tread water and float on back for one minute each.
Certification - Water Safety Instructor
To become a water safety instructor with the City of Virginia Beach, you must be at least 16 years of age, a currently certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Search and apply for positions at the
