Meet Your Coaches:
Ryan is a Virginia Beach native and big swim enthusiast. He began his swimming career on summer league teams since he was 8. A love for the sport developed through the years as Ryan joined Princess Anne High’s swim team and swam for both Tide and TCAC club teams. His favorite events in high school were the 50 and 100 freestyle. He has coached summer league and has given private lessons. Ryan’s advice for swimmers is to be patient and learn to love the process of getting better.
Garrett started swimming competitively at age 6 for a summer league team in York County, Virginia. He swam year round on club teams Fort Eustis and Typhoon Aquatics from age 8 to 17. Garrett then swam for Old Dominion University, swimming 100 yards butterfly and 100 yards backstroke. Garrett has been a swim coach for two years and was a captain of his high school swim team. Garrett’s advice to for swimmers is to remember that swimming is a team sport! Motivate your teammates and encourage them during practices and meets.
Roberta (Roby) Hudgins
Roby grew up in Naples, Italy and started swimming at the sporting club, San Gorgio in Italy. As she got older, she swam competitively in middle and high school on a year-round team. She competed at a national level in Italy, with the 100-meter butterfly being her best event. Roby has traded in her competitive swimming days for offering swim instruction to both adults and children, and has been a Water Safety Instructor for eight years. This year marks Roby’s fourth season as a coach for the Great Neck Gators. She enjoys spending time with her family, company and photography. Roby’s advice for swimmers is to remain focused, try hard, and most importantly, have fun.
Welcome to the team! I am the swim team representative. I have worked for parks and recreation for going on eight years now. I spent five years as lifeguard, coach, and swim/surf instructor with Virginia Beach, two years as pool manager and training instructor for Norfolk, and I have recently returned as a recreation specialist for the City of Virginia Beach in November 2014. I have multiple personal fitness training certifications from AFAA and TCC. I grew up right here in Virginia Beach and love the community I serve. I am an avid sports fan and huge CrossFit enthusiast. My advice to our swimmers is to focus on fitness and other skills will become easier.
