Meet Your Coaches:
Though Alec was born in Hampton, VA, he spent much of his formative years in Virginia Beach. The first team he swam for as a youngster is the Timberlake Torpedoes, and he liked swimming enough to continue through high school. Following his own swimming career, Alec became a coach, working for Green Run’s summer league for two years and for the Bow Creek Barracudas for one year. In addition to coaching, Alec has seven years of experience as a Water Safety Instructor teaching lessons to both youth and adults. Alec is currently studying Accounting at Old Dominion University. He enjoys playing music on his guitar, reading and hockey. Alec’s advice for swimmers is to always try your best.
Kathryn was born and raised in Virginia Beach and began swimming at a very young age. At age 8, she joined her first swim team, the Princess Anne Piranhas, and swam for three years. As she got older, she also swam for ODAC and her high school team. Kathryn now attends Virginia Wesleyan College studying Criminal Justice, and is the president of the school’s swim club. Kathryn feels it is important to help others learn how to swim and has been teaching swimming lessons as a Water Safety Instructor for five years. She truly enjoys swimming as well as snowboarding. Kathryn’s advice for swimmers is, "Swim for the joy of it; swimming is meant to be fun."
Roberta (Roby) Hudgins
Roby grew up in Naples, Italy and started swimming at the sporting club, San Gorgio in Italy. As she got older, she swam competitively in middle and high school on a year-round team. She competed at a national level in Italy, with the 100-meter butterfly being her best event. Roby has traded in her competitive swimming days for offering swim instruction to both adults and children, and has been a Water Safety Instructor for seven years. This year marks Roby’s third season as a coach for the Great Neck Gators. She enjoys spending time with her family, company and photography. Roby’s advice for swimmers is to remain focused, try hard, and most importantly, have fun.
Hello and welcome! I am your Team Representative. I’ve working for Parks & Recreation since 2002, and in that time have overseen swim teams at Seatack, Bayside and Princess Anne. I’m excited to get the season started for the Gators this year. Prior to joining Parks & Recreation, I was an assistant coach for the Naples Tiger Sharks swim team in Naples, Italy for two years. In addition to coaching, I have been teaching swimming as a Water Safety Instructor for fourteen years. I earned a Bachelor of Science from James Madison University in Biology and keep tapping into my science background each time I play with the pool’s water chemistry. I enjoy running (and training for races), cooking and photography. My advice to swimmers comes from Walt Disney, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”
