Meet Your Coaches:
Melissa is from right here in Virginia Beach. Melissa found her love of swimming as a teenager. She became a lifeguard first and then took the Water Safety Instructor course. She loves teaching all swimmers from toddlers just starting their water experience to competitive swimmers. The Bow Creek Barracudas will be her first competitive team. She recently completed her degree in Biology at Christopher Newport University. She enjoys being outside appreciating life in the scientific sense. Melissa celebrates the arts; she loves music and dance (lyrical, ballet, tap, and jazz). She also loves the Steelers. Melissa’s advice to swimmers is to not worry about who’s next to you, keep your eyes forward and finish the race. “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up, the most certain way to succeed is always trying one more time.” -Thomas Edison
Kirsten was born in Keflavik, Iceland. Once her family settled in Virginia Beach, Kirsten swam for the Princess Anne Piranhas the first year the team was formed. She continued swimming competitively in both middle and high school. Kirsten later came back to coach the Piranhas for five seasons, and after a break from coaching she is now eager to jump back into Winter Swim League with the Barracudas. Kirsten attends Tidewater Community College pursuing a degree in Social Science. She enjoys soccer, swimming, reading, traveling, biking and most of all hanging out with her son. Kirsten’s advice to swimmers is, "Enjoy the water! Love the strokes (every one of them) and swimming will become the most natural thing to you."
Rachel grew up in Yorktown, Virginia. Her competitive swimming experience began with the Blue Water Dolphins in Niceville, FL. Rachel attended Belmont Abbey and studied Theology and Education. Rachel swam for Indian Lakes’ summer league. She also swam for and helped coach the Victory YMCA swim team. Rachel’s advice for swimmers is to try your best.

"Hello and welcome! I am your Team Representative. I am looking forward to this swim season and it is a little bitter sweet. After three years, Bow Creek will return to the Bow Creek Recreation Center in the 2015-1016 season. I have enjoyed working with Barracudas here at Great Neck. Bow Creek was the first team I represented many years ago and it is nostalgic to finish my time with the competitive league representing Bow Creek."
