Update on Youth Tackle Football, February 10, 2016:
Over the last several months, there has been a lot of information presented about the future of the City of Virginia Beach's youth tackle football program, and it is very important that the most up-to-date information be communicated to those that participate and care so deeply about the program.
The Parks & Recreation tackle football program is currently included in the FY2017 budget (beginning July 1, 2016), and the Department is not planning to discontinue the program within that next fiscal year. Parks & Recreation is also exploring the possibility of expanding the football program to include flag football, as we recognize it may present an excellent opportunity to get even more youth involved in learning the fundamentals of the sport. The decision to add flag football, however, is being reviewed to determine the budget and staffing implications as we always do before investing in any new programs.
While the Department is not discontinuing tackle football in the next fiscal year, we are carefully examining our safety rules and regulations to ensure they meet the appropriate standards. The safety of our players in football, or any sport we provide, is always our utmost priority. If it is deemed necessary, we will update those safety standards per any new information the Department may have.
The Parks & Recreation department and our community feel passionately about youth sports. We feel strongly that youth sports are an important service to the community. We will continue to actively engage our partner volunteer Recreation Associations, parents, coaches, players, and citizens as we look at the future for all of our youth sports programs.
