Most Virginia Beach libraries have a small basic collection of genealogy books. There is access to both Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest on the computers in each building.
Local History Collection
The Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library holds the comprehensive Local History and Genealogy collection. The 11,000 book collection can be found on the first floor, at the west end of the building. Most of the materials are reference and will need to be used in the library. There is a collection of audio materials which encompasses lectures from various National Genealogical Society conferences. These may be checked out. Using them will allow you to tap into the expertise of some of the best genealogists in the county!
Included in Local History and Genealogy are books, microforms, audio materials and periodicals. There are how-to books, local histories for most of Virginia and some of North Carolina, and genealogical sources for many states. Stop by the Information Desk in the center of the floor and we will be happy to assist you.
The archives are located at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library. Many archival items are available as digital copies, or as microfilm available at the Central Library. Customers needing access to the original documents may make an appointment to view the archival items. Call (757) 385-0150 in advance to set up an appointment.
