Back-to-school time is kind of like New Year’s in September. It brings a feeling of
renewal, with all those fresh school supplies, new clothes and new classes. Before school starts, you make resolutions to be more organized to manage the chaos of kids’ projects, afterschool activities, sports and nightly homework. You resolve to prepare healthy lunches and to eat more home-cooked meals together around the dinner table.
Then school starts and it’s an avalanche of papers, places to go, things to do and nights filled with 8 p.m. shouts of “I forgot I have a project tomorrow!” And whether you have one child or ten, whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, or you work outside the home, it’s all you can do to keep up, much less have a healthy dinner on the table.
Enter your library. We have free resources to help you keep it all together. Of course you know you can find books at your library when our buildings are open
. But are you familiar with our convenient online resources? We've highlighted a few that may be helpful for back-to-school - and all you need to access them is a Virginia Beach Public Library card
By now you may know about VBPL’s digital magazines
available through Zinio. There are 200 titles to choose from and 30 genres including food and cooking, home décor, organizational inspiration, health and fitness, arts & crafts and more. There are several slow-cooker specialty publications, magazines devoted to quick, healthy dinner ideas and special issues featuring home organization tips. Access them all 24/7 via our website, download them and then read them on your computer or tablet at your convenience. You can even bookmark recipes in each magazine issue and refer to them later, or print a recipe page you’re interested in keeping.
Online Homework Tools
If you have Internet access at home, help your child use the library’s website to complete homework assignments. We have a special section for homework help
for all ages, highlighting online encyclopedias and resources for particular grades and topics. It’s especially helpful when kids suddenly remember important projects due the next day and it’s too late to go to the library in person. You can also download e-books
for book reports and term papers.
Whatever you need as the school year gets underway, we’re here to help!
