VBPL’s Pawsitive Reading with Therapy Dogs began with a very simple concept: Kids 
like to read aloud with dogs. The dogs are good listeners, they don’t judge a child, nor correct a child when he reads. Reading is critical to academic success and reading aloud is a proven way to improve children’s reading ability. As their reading skills improve, they become excited about reading and their self-confidence soars. To encourage children to read aloud, Virginia Beach Public Libraries regularly brings therapy dogs into the library for children to read with.
Pawsitive Reading with Therapy Dogs is available for any child in Kindergarten through 5th grade who wants to improve his or her reading skills. Children may bring their own books to share or read books provided by the library.
