The Virginia Beach Public Library charges overdue fines for the sole purpose of ensuring the prompt return of borrowed materials. Each part of the Library's collection belongs equally to all citizens of the City. The Library is vested with the responsibility to ensure that each citizen has an equal opportunity to use each individual item. Keeping a borrowed item for an excessive period of time deprives others of the opportunity to use that item. Fines have no direct correlation to the original or replacement cost of an item.
Overdue Material:- 25 cents per day per item: $10 maximum per item
- Bookmobile 25 cents per week per item
- Interlibrary loan 50 cents per day per item; no maximum limit
Interlibrary Loan - one way postage
- any required insurance
- some items may require an additional fee
Other fees - Lost/stolen/damaged books and materials: current replacement cost plus $5 processing fee
- Replacement library cards: $1
- Hold items not picked up or cancelled: $1 per item, assessed only on materials being held for a customer and not picked up or cancelled within the allotted timeframe
