Joni joined the world of libraries from the corporate world, having worked as a software/web developer for IBM and ATT in telecommunications. Joni decided to pursue a Master’s in Library Science degree because she thought it would be neat to work in a library “someday.” In 1994, she earned her degree and kept it in her back pocket for a rainy day - which came nearly a decade later. While preparing to move back to the U.S. after living in Marseille, France for two years, Joni found a recruitment notice for her current position at Virginia Beach Public Library. She has been with VBPL for five years.
A typical day for Joni might include gathering statistics for management and ensuring the library’s systems are running smoothly, everything from our customer information system to the library catalog. She also makes time to implement system enhancements for public and staff. She is always scanning the horizon and planning for technology impacts to ensure Virginia Beach Public Library’s customers and staff have access to the information they need.
In her free time, Joni can be found golfing, biking, kayaking, or helping with environmental causes such as water cleanups and oyster gardening, traveling to Europe, or hanging out at A.R.E.
