Developmental Services Division Internships
DS Division Internship Opportunities:
The Virginia Beach Department of Human Services DS Division is pleased to offer internship opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students in a human services curriculum of an accredited school, university or college. In addition, supervised Social Work and Counseling practicum are provided to students majoring in the field. Internships are available year-round. Within this page, you will find information on how to get started in a rewarding internship opportunity that will enhance your skills and provide you with the tools to excel in your professional career in human services.
Internship Program Objectives:
The Virginia Beach Department of Human Services recognizes the important role we play in serving as a training site for area colleges and universities as well as for persons who have completed their advanced degree in a behavioral health field, desire licensure by a board of the Virginia Department of Health Professions, and lack only the internship required by that board. Where feasible, we encourage supervisory staff to make use of students to serve as volunteers within agency programs and to foster the workforce development efforts of institutions of higher learning via internships.
Internships offer us the opportunity to ensure that future professionals will enter the human services field with a sense of responsibility, dedication, and commitment; ready to make a positive difference in the lives of the people we serve. The hard work and energy that we put into making your internship experience successful will pay off in dedicated professionals who may, one day, wish to return to our department as employees.
Our goals are to provide you with the following opportunities:
•To apply academic course work to a hands-on practical experience
•To problem solve in a work environment
•To exchange ideas with professionals in the field
•To gain pride in and appreciation of the field
•To gain competent professional skills in a variety of settings
•To expose you to projects and tasks that will provide practical experience for future job opportunities and which support and contribute to the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services’ delivery of services
•To expose you to other local and state human services organizations which provide opportunities for professional development and career enhancement
