Family Support Services is a component of the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services, Developmental Services Division. To be eligible, individuals must have Intellectual Disability as a primary diagnosis and reside in the city of Virginia Beach.
PALS I (Play and Leisure Skills) Center
The PALS I program provides respite care for children and young adults ages 13 to 22 who are in a special education school program. The family is responsible for coordination of all transportation to and from the program. PALS I operates Monday through Friday from 2:00pm - 5:30pm on school days and from 8:30am - 5:30pm during summer. The program provides supervision by trained staff with an emphasis on leisure play and socialization. Availability is dependent upon program enrollment and ability to provide for the individual's needs. Part-time enrollment (2-3 days) is available during winter months only.
PALS II (Providing Adults Learning Skills)
The PALS II program provides recent special education high school graduates a temporary day placement while awaiting employment, permanent day support program, or waiver funding. Referrals are limited to those between the ages of 22 to 25, and all must come through Developmental Services Case Management Unit. Program hours are 9:30am - 5:30pm Monday through Friday, early drop off is available for an additional fee. There is a minimum 3-day per week participation.
|RRS (Respite Reimbursement Subsidy)|
RRS provides a quarterly reimbursement subsidy to families who meet program eligibility. It is designed to assist families with the cost of respite care in the home or community for family members with special needs ages 9 years or older. Orientation and enrollment are available on a monthly basis and is required for participation. Subsidies are provided on a quarterly basis and are dependent upon city funding.
If a consumer is receiving any government waiver services he/she is ineligible to receive RRS subsidy funds.
