What is the Earned Income Tax Credit?
EITC, the earned income tax credit also called EIC or Earned Income Credit, is a benefit for certain people who work and have low to moderate wages. A tax credit means more money in your pocket. It reduces the amount of tax you owe and may also give you a refund.

As of January 1, 2013, the Virginia Department of Taxation will only issue state tax refunds through direct deposit or a new prepaid Debt Card. |
| By selecting Direct Deposit you can have your refund deposited directly into your bank account. Direct deposit is the fastest way to receive your refund. If you do not select direct deposit when you file your income tax return, you will receive a debit card. |

South Hampton Roads Earned Income Tax Coalition
Virginia Beach is happy to partner with the South Hampton Roads Earned Income Tax Coalition. The Coalition helps eligible low to moderate income families receive the EITC through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout Hampton Roads including Virginia Beach. The EITC can provide thousands of dollars to hard working families.
Helping citizens obtain their maximum refund can be a jump start to emergency savings and provide funds to catch up on bills. While EITC has been around for more than 37 years, twenty percent (20%) of eligible families still do not claim this credit and get the refunds they have earned.
To learn more about the EITC or how to volunteer to be a volunteer income tax preparer, visit SHREITC.
2013 Regional Tax Summit
By IRS estimates 20-25 percent of eligible households do not receive their earned income tax credit. On January 10, 2013, the Regional Tax Summit was held to provide the tools and resources necessary to assist working families. Review the
Regional Tax Data Report and view the
Summit PowerPoint.
