Virginia Beach Housing & Neighborhood Preservation provides and supports a variety of resources to help people obtain, keep and maintain housing. While the department doesn't own or operate any housing itself, we can connect people, housing and neighborhoods to some of our key programs and services, including:

"Our City, Our Homeless, Our Shared Responsibility - Moving our Community Forward to Address Homelessness" - This presentation which is being presented to City Council on Tuesday, November 01, 2011 can be viewed through the link above. The presentation summarizes the history of city efforts to end homelessness, presents a vision of the future, a three year action plan, a summary of work regarding the relocation of the Lighthouse Center, and discusses a proposal to move forward.

Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8): provides housing assistance to eligible, very low- and extremely low-income persons/families, enabling them to find decent, safe and sanitary housing by subsidizing a portion of their rent.

Shelter and Housing for the Homeless: we are committed to helping the homeless and preventing families and individuals from becoming homeless. The department provides funding to several organizations and has partnered with neighboring cities on regional housing projects for the homeless in Virginia Beach.

Lighthouse Center: Since 2009, we have been engaged in a process of finding a suitable new location for an expanded Lighthouse homeless day services center.

Code Enforcement: maintains the safety and appearance of the city's existing structures and properties through routine inspections.

Loans and Grants for Home Repair: funds are available in a variety of programs to help homeowners repair their homes and reduce future maintenance costs.

Workforce Housing: was created to improve affordable housing opportunities for vital members of our community - our teachers, police officers, firefighters, nurses, medical technicians, military personnel, retail workers, recent college graduates and young families.

The Virginia Beach Department of Housing & Neighborhood Preservation does business in accordance with the federal fair housing law and Section 504 program accessibility requirements.

The department complies with the Fair Housing Act and provides reasonable accommodations and modifications to persons with disabilities. Virginia Beach Housing & Neighborhood Preservation does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, or national origin in admission or access to its programs.
