The Investigations division of the FMB is responsible for determining fire origin and cause, be it accidental, natural, or incendiary, threats to burn, oversight of the juvenile fire setters program (13 and above), fire fatalities, serious fire related injuries, and incidents involving explosive devices. Fire investigators have full police powers and routinely conduct criminal investigations throughout the city. There are five investigators currently assigned to the FMB and unlike inspectors they are not assigned to battalions, allowing each investigator the ability to cover any incident throughout the city. Investigators also partner with other agencies and departments in order to maximize resources when faced with large scale incidents and multi-jurisdictional issues.
