Residential Severe Repetitive Loss Program (SRL)
The SRL grant program was authorized by the Bunning-Bereuter-Blumenauer Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2004, which amended the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968 to provide funding to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of flood damage to SRL structures insured under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This program is meant to reduce or eliminate further claims under the NFIP through project activities that will result in the greatest savings to the National Flood Insurance Fund (NFIF).
The City is currently working with nine homeowners on the Severe Repetitive Loss Program (SRL). This is the first time that the City of Virginia Beach has participated in this program and we are looking at a completion of this project by 2013. We are using this opportunity to examine the process and the overall program to assess whether it is beneficial both to the homeowner and to the City of Virginia Beach. We understand that there are other homes in the city that would benefit from this program and while we are not accepting anymore applications at this time, we are gathering information from homeowners that are interested, in the future, if funds are available.
