Chief Bruce W. Edwards joined the rescue service in February 1967. He assumed the position of Executive Director of the Emergency Coronary Care Program for the rescue squads in February 1973 and Coordinator of EMS in 1975. In 1984 he assumed the position of Director of Emergency Medical Services. Chief Edwards, a National Registry Paramedic, holds a Bachelor's degree in Education and a Master of Public Administration from Old Dominion University.
Chief Edwards' responsibilities include:
The making of rules, regulations and policies concerning the general management, direction, operation and control of the Department
The training and certification of all personnel
The implementation of medical policy
The regulation of several private ambulance agencies and all oceanfront lifeguard operations
The direction of all emergency medical services activities for the city
