Councilmember DeSteph is a retired U.S. Naval Reserve Officer and is serving his second term on City Council. He joined Applied Marine Technology, Inc. (AMTI), and under his leadership the company grew to become so successful they were able to sell it; it is now a part of Science Applications International Corporation. He retired from AMTI and is now fostering the development of many small businesses headquartered in Virginia Beach. He is also focused on fulfilling his philanthropic goals. He lives in Virginia Beach with his son Michael and daughter Jennifer. He serves as Council Liaison to the Bikeways and Trails Advisory Committee, the Military Economic Development Advisory Committee, the Clean Community Commission, the Community Organization Grant Review Commission, the Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation, the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Museum Foundation and Lynnhaven River NOW.
