Councilmember Martin is a Hampton Roads native who grew up in Norfolk and has lived in Virginia Beach for 20 years. He is the founder and principal engineer of Martin Engineering, a small Virginia Beach-based company. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Washington and Lee University, with a double major in physics /engineering and mathematics, and is a graduate of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia. He is active in several local civic groups. He is a former member of the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Area Board, the city’s Process Improvement Steering Committee, the Arts & Humanities Commission, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters Development Advisory Board, Friends of the Virginia Beach Historic Houses, is former president of the Rotary Club of Cape Henry and is a volunteer swim coach with Virginia Beach Special Olympics. Martin has been active with the civic league at Baylake Pines, where he lives with his wife, Tracey, and son, Henry. He was appointed to an at-large seat on the City Council effective Jan. 1, 2014.
