Virginia Cooperative Extension views the family unit as the cornerstone of a healthy community. We strive to improve the well being of Virginia families through programs that help participants put research-based knowledge to work in their lives.
Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) is a statewide network which links research, science, and technology of Virginia's land grant universities to help meet the needs of the people of the commonwealth. Extension's mission is to help educate Virginia's citizens in dealing with issues that impact their daily lives.
Family and Consumer Sciences Programs of VCE provide research based information to enable families to prevent and solve persistent problems. Our programs assist in improving their quality of life by increasing their knowledge, skills, and abilities to manage resources, maintain health, develop supportive and effective human relationships and enhance home and community environments. VCE, Family and Consumer Sciences offers educational programming and resources to Virginia's families, ranging in ages from five to seniors, in the following areas:
· Family Financial Management
· Nutrition and Wellness
· Family and Human Development
Virginia families have faced many challenges in recent years: downsizing of companies, loss of jobs, reduction of wages, reduced benefits, and possibly even bankruptcy. Many families are struggling to leave the welfare roll, to start a business, or to stretch available resources to meet needs. Increasing housing costs and growing concern about environmental hazards force Virginia families to make tough choices to achieve safe and affordable housing.
Virginia Cooperative Extension teaches families to improve their lives through an educational process that uses scientific knowledge focused on issues and needs.
Whatever your stage of life, Virginia Cooperative Extension has materials you can use. Extension has publications, information, and programs about family and human development, personal financial management, housing, consumer education, food safety, nutrition, and health. Extension can help you learn to make better decisions and better use of your resources for a better life.
