What is 4-H?

4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills.

The four-H's stand for: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. They represent the four points of the 4-H pledge: clearer thinking, greater loyalty, larger service, and better living.

4-H is the youth development program of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, an off-campus program, conducted by Virginia Tech and Virginia State Universities. It is an informal, hands-on education approach focusing on building lifelong learning skills that develop youths' potential. 4-H is a learn-by-doing program for youth ages 5-19.

4-H programs are designed to engage youth in healthy learning experiences, thus increasing self-esteem and problem-solving skills. Youth involvement is by way of community clubs, special interest projects and groups, camps, and special school activities.

4-H projects cover a wide range of subjects such as citizenship, animal science, natural resources and environmental education, family sciences, foods, nutrition, and health, careers and economic education, leadership and personal development and plants, soils, and entomology.  A child can concentrate on one subject area or he/she can become involved with a variety of subjects.

How to Join Virginia Beach 4-H:
4-H offers opportunities for youth ages 5-18.  Some clubs specifically focus on the Cloverbuds (youth ages 5-8), some clubs require youth be at least 9 years old to join, while others are for youth of all ages.  Joining 4-H is free; however some activities may have minimal costs associated with them.  To join you choose the club or clubs you wish to become involved in and attend one of their meetings.  The 4-H club leaders will have enrollment paperwork for you to complete at that meeting.

If you would like more information about joining, please call the Virginia Beach Extension Office at (757) 385-4769 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
