Excellence In Agriculture:
Each year, in conjunction with National Agriculture Week, the Virginia Beach Excellence in Agriculture Award Committee selects and recognizes the “Virginia Beach Excellence in Agriculture Award,” “Friend of Agriculture,” and “Special Recognition” recipients in an effort to recognize individuals who have been actively supporting the Agriculture industry in our City. During National Agriculture Week the Committee hosts the Excellence In Agriculture annual banquet, the largest agriculture event of the year.
March 23, 2011, The Virginia Beach Excellence in Agriculture Award Committee recognized Mr. Howard Salmons as the “2010 Virginia Beach Excellence In Agriculture Award” recipient. Mr. Salmon’s support in preserving agriculture and his community contributions serve as an example to many. At this year’s banquet the committee also recognized Dr. Pete Schultz, head of the AREC as “2010 Friend of Agriculture” and Laura Wood Habr, owner of CROC’s as “2010 Special Recognition,” both very deserving recipients as well. Commissioner Matt Lohr, of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, will be this year’s key note speaker.
Criteria for Consideration:
Current and past actions as residents of Virginia Beach; contributions to the community; good standing as a member of the community. Noteworthy accomplishments such as agricultural stewardship, land preservation, entrepreneurial thinking/application; and community civic activity are examples of criteria used to evaluate a candidate when selecting a recipient for an award.
