Where you live isn’t just about the kind of house you live in. Where you live determines the schools your children attend, the jobs that are available, how long your commute is or whether there is public transportation. The convenience of grocery stores, shopping centers, medical care and other services also depend on where you live.
When housing choices are limited by discriminatory housing practices and policies, communities and individuals are denied opportunities for growth.
The Fair Housing Act of 1968 prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing on the basis of seven protected classes:
- Race
- Color
- National origin
- Religion
- Sex
- Disability
- Familial status
Virginia’s Fair Housing Law expands protections for all who live in the Commonwealth and also prohibits discrimination based on:
- Elderliness
- Sexual orientation
- Gender identity
- Military status
- Source of funds
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the most comprehensive civil rights legislation adopted to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities. Public and private businesses, state and local government agencies, private entities offering public accommodations, and services, transportation, and utilities are required to comply with the law.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination based on disability in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. This coverage extends to all aspects of the program administration and implementation.
