The City of Virginia Beach is a participating community in
the National Flood Insurance Program, which offers flood insurance to residents
and business owners.
As a requirement to participate in the NFIP, Virginia
Beach must maintain and enforce floodplain regulations that are designed to
protect lives and property during a flood. The City of Virginia Beach is
currently in the process of updating their Flood Ordinance.
A public meeting
will be held on September 26th at the Advanced Technology Center from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. and from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. to present proposed changes.
- The Floodplain ordinance is being changed to meet newer FEMA requirements. An overview of the changes will be presented by City staff.
- Stormwater Management program changes, including revised ordinance and technical design criteria are required by State law. Representatives from Kimley-Horn and Associates, an engineering consultant for the City, will present an overview of the new state requirements and how program changes will affect development in the City of Virginia Beach.
- After the two presentations, staff from Kimley-Horn, and the Departments of Planning, Public Works and Public Utilities will answer attendees’ questions and receive comments.
